Avoid a Long Wait for an Assessment
Waiting times for an NHS autism assessment can be long and vary considerably depending on where you live.
For some people, this means spending a considerable amount of time waiting for answers.
A private assessment provides another option.
We aim to provide a thorough and professional assessment without an unnecessarily long wait. We will explain the process, costs and what is involved before you decide whether you would like to go ahead.

Why Consider an Autism Assessment?
People come to us for many different reasons.
You may have wondered about autism for years. Someone close to you may have mentioned it or you may have started recognising autistic characteristics in yourself after learning more about autism.
For some people, difficulties with work, relationships, communication, social situations, change or sensory environments lead them to seek an assessment.
For others, it is simply about understanding themselves better.
A diagnosis can help make sense of experiences that may have been present since childhood.
It may also help when discussing appropriate support or reasonable adjustments at work, in education or in other areas of life.
What Does the Assessment Involve?ADOS-2
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a standardised assessment used by trained professionals as one part of an autism assessment.
It allows the clinician to consider areas including social communication, interaction and behaviours associated with autism.
ADI-R
The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) is a structured clinical interview that explores developmental history and experiences from childhood onwards.
Where appropriate and possible, information may also be gathered from a parent, relative or another person who knew you well during childhood.
Clinical Assessment
ADOS-2 and ADI-R are not used in isolation.
Information gathered during your assessment is considered alongside your developmental history, current experiences and other relevant clinical information.
This allows the clinicians involved to build a much fuller picture before reaching a diagnostic conclusion.
What Happens During the Assessment?
Initial consultation
We discuss why you are seeking an assessment, explain the process and answer any questions you have.

You will be asked about your experiences, health, education, employment, relationships and development.
ADOS-2 assessment
You will complete an ADOS-2 assessment with an appropriately trained professional.
Developmental assessment
A detailed developmental history is taken, which may include an ADI-R where appropriate.
Clinical review
The information gathered during the assessment is reviewed by the professionals involved.
Feedback and report
We explain the outcome to you and provide a written report setting out the findings and recommendations.
What Can an Assessment Help With?
An autism assessment can provide a better understanding of:
- communication and social interaction
- sensory differences
- routines and responses to change
- relationships and social situations
- strengths and areas where support may be useful
- experiences that have been present since childhood
- adjustments that could make work or everyday life easier
For many adults, one of the biggest benefits is simply having an explanation for experiences they may have struggled to understand for many years.
A Professional and Respectful Approach
We understand that deciding to have an autism assessment can feel like a significant step.
You will not be treated as a collection of symptoms or expected to behave in a particular way.
We want to understand your experiences, including your strengths, difficulties and the things that are important to you.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the process and we will explain what is happening at each stage.
